It's me, DougV again-- with a different problem. I'm helping a friend w/ his PC-- he managed to get a bunch of nasty stuff on his system. I think I've removed most of it with scanners, but there's one thing I can't get rid of: an item in the tray that keeps popping up fake warning messages and trying to access Spylock.com.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:
O2 - BHO: Windows Live Toolbar Helper - {BDBD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar\msntb.dll (file missing)

(Warning : running option #2 will set your desktop background blank again. But you can reapply your desktop background again afterwards
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.
Post the log from smitfraudfix in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

hi miekiemoes, thanks for the instructions. And no problem about the delay-- I see you're very busy. I worry that the dogs aren't getting enough of your time 
Anyway, I followed your instructions exactly, and it seems to have worked-- the flashing icon in the tray is finally gone!

Great, the system seems to be fine now. I scanned it again w/ Ad-Aware and Spybot and removed a few more little items-- then rebooted/scanned again, and it's perfectly clean.
My friend will be glad to know his PC is usable again (I'll make sure he runs anti-spyware software from now on).
