i appears that i have or had the same issues as whats described under "titan maleware"
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=1004

so i DL & ran the SmitfraudFix...which seemed stopped the popups and home page hijacking...

however... when i run a full system scan w/ ad-aware...(definitions = SE1R111 08.06.2006)
my anti-virus comes up with the following "trojans":

get access.class
insecureclassloader.class
installer.class

are these bad?

Also, when ever i log onto XP as any user, ad-watch blocks 5 registery changes and about 60 tracking cookies..

thank you.

Please post these logs:

1. log from SmitfraudFix which is called: rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed

2. Adaware Scan log
Please can you make sure that you are using
Ad-aware SE Build 106r1
Note: If your version is 6.0 and not the SE, you need to uninstall and get the latest version from the above link.

[if not Uninstall your old Ad-aware first then install SE]
Then use the WebUpDate
to get the latest Definition file
SE1R111 08.06.2006
To do this Open Ad-aware
Click the WebUpDate
button at the top right hand side of the Ad-aware screen (The world globe).
Click "Connect"
Ad-aware will then download the latest Definition file for you.
To make sure it is updated , look at the main
Ad-aware screen, and look under "Initialization Status"
It should say the Latest Definition file.
then scan doing a "Full Scan" and then post your logfile here by using the Add-Reply Feature .
As Logs are stored in :
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-aware\Logs\.
An easy way to get there is to
click Start,
click Run
And type in and press ENTER: %appdata%
then click Lavasoft
then Ad-Aware
and then Logs.
scroll down to find the latest one that you have
(by date & time)
and open it right Click select all
copy and then paste the contents of it here.
(Make sure that all of your Logfile has been posted, sometimes it will require two post's to get it all)
I recommend that you use the WebUpDate just before you scan that way you will always be up to date.

(note The Application Data is a hidden folder, so you will need to show hidden files and folders)

3. A HijackThis log (if you need help on how to do that here's the instruction:

LS CalamityJane
Thanks!

Ok, you got a double whammy. Smitfraud is gone but you also got a Coolwebsearch variant that is very difficult to remove mad.gif It'll take me a few minutes to write up that fix. Be right back.
LS CalamityJane
You're getting reinfected with Smitfraud too and some other junk. Let's make sure you don't have a downloader trojan running.

1. Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

or here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet

2. Please download the free trial program Ewido per the following instructions. This is a good trojan scanner and will help to block any further trojan downloads of malware onto your system while we're trying to clean it all up. Should any nasties try to enter your system it should popup a warning and you can block anything new coming in. But first lets install it, update it, and we'll scan later in SAFE MODE.

Download, install, and update Ewido AntiMalware (get the free trial version)
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

a. Install Ewido AntiMalware

b. Launch Ewido, there should be a big yellowE icon on your desktop, double-click it.

c. The program will prompt you to update click the OK button

d. The program will now go to the main screen

e. On the left hand side of the main screen click on Update

f. Click on Start. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

g. Do not scan yet. We'll do that later in SAFE MODE. After updating close Ewido and any open programs.

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button smile.gif

3. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
4. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

5. Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and with all browsers closed, (so you won't have this windows to view)

6. Reboot into Safe Mode
You can usually do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

7. Open HijackThis and do a *scan only*
When it is finished, checkmark these items in the list and press the *fix checked* button

Close HijackThis

8. Still in Safe mode, double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier and saved to your desktop.

Click on *Begin Removal*

AboutBuster will ask to shut down all Internet Explorer Windows. Click *Yes*

Wait while AboutBuster scans your PC for files to delete. When done, it will popup a notice that is it completed. Click *ok* to that and exit the program.

9. Start Ewido AntiMalware

a. Click on scanner

b. Click on *complete system scan*

c. Let the program scan the machine.

d. While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose Remove, then put a check next to Perform action on all infections in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time.
Checkmark the box: *Create encrypted backup in the quarantine* (recommended)

Click OK.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

10. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • click "save"
    IN "filename" enter log.txt
  • click exit to exit the BFU program.
Please copy the contents of the log.txt back here in your next reply. The log.txt will be in the C:\BFU\ folder

Reboot back into normal mode

11. Now please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. Post that log into your topic along with the other requested logs named below.

You did really well! biggrin.gif

But don't let Adwatch block the changes we're trying to make here. Either choose "allow" on any alerts after your reboot or turn it off altogether for now and we'll turn it back on after you are clean.

Do it this way to disable Adwatch for now:

This to Disable AdWatch

Open AdAware SE.

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off

3. Uncheck (red X) both items.
....................................................
(you can do this step in normal mode)

Open HijackThis and do a *scan only*
When it finishes checkmark these entries in the list and then press *fix checked*

im going start ad watch again...

things appear much...much better!!!

if im clean...i have a couple questions if you got the time?

1. what programs/protection should i run other than ad-aware and mcafee anti-virus?

2. should i be concerned that any of my personal information has been released? we use this computer for online banking, and i play poker for $$$.

3. is their any way to find the bast@rds that do this and get revenge?

4. if your ever around the pittsburgh area, can i buy you a drink? cool.gif

Can you post a fresh HijackThis log please? I'd just like to review it to make sure.

You had some nasty hijackers, but I didn't see anything like a keylogger or backdoor trojan, if that makes you feel more assured on the safety matter.

As for how you got infected? Well, I see you are still on SP1 which means you probably aren't current on Windows Critical Security Updates. This particular infection we have noticed like to use exploits against unpatched systems to install on you silently. Specifically, we know one exploit they use is the WMF exploit which was patched by Microsoft back in Jan. 2006. If you have the update you are protected, but if you don't you are a sitting duck. You need to patch your system!! Get all the recommended Windows security updates which will be SP2 and then go back and get the rest...there will be more even after you install SP2.
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

Then, your Sun Java is also out of date and a security vulnerability. Because Your Sun Java is out of date and old versions left on your pc, even after updating can be vulnerable to malware exploit. Go to Start / Control Panel and look in Add/Remove programs. Remove all old versions of Sun Java. Then go get the latest up to date version here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Here's why removing old versions of Sun Java is important:
Potential Vulnerability with Sun Java auto update

I'll give you some more prevention recommendations, but I really would like to see a final HijackThis log and then we'll move on to prevention smile.gif

QUOTE(icculus @ Jun 13 2006, 09:33 PM) *
i play poker for $$$.

Unfortunately that makes you a prime target. Where there are $$$ and gambling - there are scammers and those sites are not always safe because they target victims who visit those.

See here for an example:
Poker gamers targeted by a rootkit backdoor

Be extra sure you have all those critical security updates from Windows if you visit gambling sites! They are a known hotbed for those seeking to exploit unpatched systems.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help smile.gif.
How do I prevent Browser Hijacks and Spyware?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13620

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
icculus
ok everything is finished....(except the MBSA...)

however, i noticed that everytime i log on to XP... IE is automatically started, prior to ad-aware or mcafee?

it is not in my startup folder? im afraid im vulnerable since its starts before im protected? i havent fully explored why this is happening yet.

in any case, you are outstanding at you job,
THANK YOU
LS CalamityJane
It's in the startups here:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IEXPLORE.EXE] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

You can use HijackThis to "fix checked" that item in the registry.

To make sure the it's not infected, use an online AV scanner like one of the of the following:
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
(if prompted, please *allow* Active X and the install of software - this is needed to scan your system)
It will take a while to download the updates needed, and then you'll be presented with a screen to scan your system.
