As anyone who works with HJT will attest to, there can be some difficulties when a user downloads the program and places it in a temporary location, or on the desktop. It isn't a matter of "fixing" things, but the possibility that the backups can be lost when one uses a cleaner, etc.

We all know that an unskilled user can reduce a perfectly good computer into a worthless paperweight by fixing things that aren't broken ... hence the need for the backups to work properly.

Might I suggest that the staff here follow this download procedure?

Download HijackThis© Merijn from: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe .

This installer will put HijackThis onto your computer at C:\Program Files\HijackThis (it will make an entry in the Start menu and also provide a desktop shortcut).

At the download prompt, choose "Save". After the download is complete, navigate to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder and double-click it to complete the installation.

Double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop. Choose "Do a system scan and save logfile". The log will open in Notepad and you can copy/paste it here.

CONGRATULATIONS ON SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO OPEN FORUM DISCUSSION!

Thanks Lavasoft!

It is very worth noting to add with the above that in order to remove any mystery or mistake and prevent miscalculated errors, that occasionally can happen, that the HijackThis Program also incorporates a saved removal section specifically designed to restore any items removed.

Yes, it's important to note that those HijackThis backups are auto created and in the past have been spread all over the affected users desktop because of running it at any location directly without a folder.
Some windows settings automatically remove temp contents after closing the browser or upon reboot which is mostly neccessary to effect a successful intrusion file(s) removal and those backups can become lost too if HJT is in some TEMP location.

So very good reminder indeed and Please remember, ONLY use HijackThis with expert guidance from forum officials particularly charged with helping you with your computer issues with this program.

C:\ folder, Program Files, or other permanant directory can keep the HJT folder w/ the program readily on hand and safely store backups so they can be be recalled again by the program if or when needed.
