I have tried to update my definitions file since 11/2 using both the integrated tool and by downloading from the site and copying to the program folder, and I receive error message: "The downloaded file could not be read, please update again", and then the warnings that the "Definitions file is not loaded or invalid" and "Definitions file not found or corrupted". I have also tried your recommended procedures, to no avail. I am running Windows 98 SE and have never had a problem before. Please advise.

Hi brendawilli.

It appears that someone forgot to load the new Defs to the download server. This problem has been reported elsewhere as well. I suggest trying the WebUpdate again as that seems to be working now.

This looks good for Corinne's problem, but I don't believe it's mine. My Ad-aware updater seems to connect fine, and it says, "Webupdate complete," but the progress bar always stops at 85%. It's been going on for at least a few weeks (I've had other things demanding immediate attention), and I'm wondering if I should uninstall/reinstall a more recent free version. I also have Windows 98SE, so hopefully it's still covered (I love it). But it does seem that this updater is broken....the installed reference file is very old. Anybody else had anything similar happen? It's version 6.0.1.181.

Hi Miami,
QUOTE

That is indeed an old out-dated version of Ad-Aware.

If you are using the (free) Personal version, please upgrade to: Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06, then try updating to the latest Definition File - SE1R130 02.11.2006

NB: Uninstall your older version BEFORE installing Ad-Aware SE Personal

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Spike

Thank you, Spike, for taking the time.... I'm glad I came back today. A friend told me last night that, contrary to what I had thought, the Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition is a new free version. I have a knee-jerk reaction when I see a 'notification' of an upgrade of some sort...Lavasoft is the very first company I have heard of that is not merely trying to sell me something! What true grace!
Anyhoo, I installed the new one last night. Thankfully, the System Requirements were easy to see, and liberal enough for this old workhorse (W98SE), and I did uninstall the old one first...I figured the Uninstall button must be there for a good reason. The update worked as it should, and the scan just whizzed along. It's all I hoped for, and more. Once I've thoroughly studied it, I'm going to look into those plug ins! They, too, were easy to find...great website in general.
So, thank you, and Lavasoft, too. I should have visited years ago!
Sincerely,
Miami

You're welcome, Miami biggrin.gif

Lavasoft has always been very generous in giving free access to their scanner.

The (paid-for) Plus and Professional versions have real-time protection with the Ad-Watch component, but as a "freebie", Personal is great.

Regards,

Spike
