New again today.
SE1R283
26.08.2008

OOPS -- that's what it says, that's what the ZIP file timestamp says.
But the actual def file inside as of now is still the one from 8/22.
Same problem as earlier.

Try again later.

And no, I'm just noting these for a few days, hoping someone at Lavasoft will
--- flag the problem with old updates inside new ZIP files, since that's false assurance for people -- bad!
--- do something to call attention to these files being available, once they are reliably available and identified correctly.

People who don't, for whatever reason, update to the new version need the help, now that automatic updating is broken.
Er, not operative. Discontinued. Whatever.

It's mostly the older folks I know who never noticed SE had quit updating automatically.
I point them here and set up a bookmark and a reminder to look for an update.

Me, I'm adding the notes here for a little while to get used to the habit of checking every day, and to get other people willing to actually check whether the defs file they get is the defs file the package says they're getting.

Bad bug.

Content of latest def "update" appears not to have changed; it's still 4.41 MB. I'll try again later.

Why don't you just point them to:-

http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/

and tell them to take a butchers at the top right hand corner?!

I do -- with the caution that the link on that page is often -- over-eager? Optimistic? Prematurely updated?
Wrong.

Just using the thread here to note that while I remain interested.

For example right now that link says: SE1R285 04.09.2008

What's inside the ZIP file? SE1R284 02.09.2008

Noted here to perhaps attract the attention of those who aren't reading the timestamps and may be misled into thinking they're updating when they're just copying a mislabeled file.

Lavasoft folks change the label -- probably as soon as the update exists somewhere --- and the change appears on the download button hours (or days) before the actual update file becomes available to those clicking that link.

When we have true AI, the link can actually look inside the ZIP file to check and name itself correctly, eh?

I see your point now!

Looks like Lavasoft is getting sloppy with regards to SE updates, probably due to the fact that they're only still providing them under duress. There again, I'm surprised the Sword of Damocles still hasn't fallen on those still using SE!!

Update identified as available now: SE1R286 09.09.2008 (per the download link identification)

ZIP file downloaded (as of this minute) contains: SE1R284

So --- the "off by one" error is now an "off by two" error.

Trust, but verify.

Update identified as available now: SE1R299 21.10.2008 (per the download link identification)

ZIP file downloaded (as of this minute) contains: SE1R298 16.10.2008

So --- the "off by one" error is back. That's an improvement.

Trust, but verify.

See, if I'm late to check, it's more likely I'll find the current file is available (grin).

Looked today for the first time since, er, last time: 1301 announced (10/28) and available in the ZIP file.

And I really do appreciate LavaSoft continuing to make these available.

Yes I would like to thank you very much for continuing the updates for SE, I have a very old computer that won't take 07 or 08 if it wasn't for you continuing these updates I would have very little security.

Thank you happy.gif biggrin.gif

But Yank, if you're running XP/Vista then you CAN upgrade to a newer product! If your machine is capable of running XP then it's capable of running Ad-Aware 2007 or 2008 !

You must be, because the SE definitions haven't worked with older operating systems since last May........

Apart from the furor over what ZIP file contains what defs, why is it that none of the defs that I have downloaded work? The defs file that came with the program is from 1-29-2007 and is the only file that works. When I unzip and use the defs files that I have downloaded from Lavasoft the program will not load them and gives an error message. What do you suggest would be my correct course of action here?

As I explained to you in the other thread you recently posted in, although you can still manually download a definitions file for Ad-Aware SE, it HASN'T worked for people using 98/ME since last May. There was a great deal of debate here about six months ago as to the nature of the problem, and the conclusion we came to (based on the suggestions of yours truly!!) was that a size issue was stopping it from loading on 98/ME boxes.

So, basically, any new definitions file since mid May is of no use to you, since you're trying to use it under Windows ME.
