Hi Gnert, As I said here, "However, once a 'pooter fails to pick-up an auto-update, that's it! Updating to the latest defs and then trying an auto doesn't help." I have no current experience of the free edition of SE, as I'm running SE PLUS. But I'm led to believe that the manual updating of "free SE" works as described earlier in this thread. I'm guessing that you successfully updated your SE manually, and then retried an auto-update? Did the manual update work - i.e., does the date of your installed defs.file match that of the manual download? Hi, You guess right, that's what I tried to do. The manual update seems to have worked fine, the dates of the definition on the update screen became 07/05 08 after I did the manual update. I thought the defs. file would tell the program where to look for new updates and that it was not the actual update itself. Seems that I misunderstood and can go back to using the program knowing it's the latest update:) Thank you very much for your help Gnert |

OK . . .
I have SE Pro. I downloaded the file, unzipped it just fine, deleted the one file and added the new file, and rebooted my computer. Still stops and refuses to update. What do I try next? |

Indeed, it does. OK - As I said here, "However, once a 'pooter fails to pick-up an auto-update, that's it! Updating to the latest defs and then trying an auto doesn't help." I did read earlier today here, LS Digger Barnes mention ISP issues. I don't believe it myself, as two of my PC's update fine, and the third doesn't - and that's all via the same ISP (Virgin Media). However, maybe try his suggestion about re-installing SE with the alleged "patch" and let us know how you get on? Hope that this helps? Well this stinks.
I followed the link (thanks for that!!) after uninstalling my version of SE Pro only to find out that I have to have the registration info in order to download the other version. This is my work computer and I have NO idea what that registration info is. I suppose I just lost AdAware . . . |

Duh! Thanks!!! A'hem.... Sorry - shouldn't laugh - we've all done it! Let us know if the new "patched installation file" thingy works. What good is life if we can't laugh at ourselves!!! Seriously, though - if I don't have the registration information I can't install the patched installation file. =( It asks for my log-in information in order to download it (what log-in information?!! lol) and won't let me bypass that. |

FYI, I have added to the topic title 'Fix for'. This may save all a lot of work.
It does work as I have done it on my daughter's PC. I am running AAW 2008 on both my PCs. This post has been edited by Pierre67: May 9 2008, 12:54 AM

No worries Royjean. I've just seen your new post over there - good luck with getting help! Gelert. Sorry Gelert for posting back here, but still no luck over at that other forum you sent me to. I am still stuck w/o being able to download the newest def files. So my AdAware is still sitting at the April 20th def files which are totally useless to me. Do you have any suggestions? Would I still have the same problem if I "PAID" for AdAware? I am at a loss here. Thanks, ~Royjean~ |

I am not able to find the SE1R243 30.04.2008. All I see is the SE1R247 13.05.2008 download file. I did download this and unzipped it and it contains a file known as core.aawdef not the defs.ref file.
Where do I find the SE1R243 30.04.2008? Thanks Kenn This is the usual path: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE
Look for the file "defs.ref". This is the FILE that you need to REPLACE. Goto http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ and click e.g. SE1R243 30.04.2008 underneath the AdAware SE Icon in the top right hand side of the screen. Don't RUN, but SAVE the file to e.g. your desktop. Then UN-zip the file to e.g. your desktop. Delete the current "defs.ref" file in C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE. Replace with the now unpacked "Defs.ref" file. Reboot. Enjoy! PS: I've been saving all of the files (UNzipped) since I started to have download problems about a week ago. Might be a wise move on your part too? This post has been edited by Kenn: May 13 2008, 08:16 PM |

I don't have a zip program, and am not the most savy computer expert. Would possibly deleting the whole Lavasoft Ad-Aware program and then reloading it work? Thanks

BUT make sure that you have all of the necessary registration info (original email address / user name / password etc) that you used during your original purchase. Why not just find an unzipping program? The one that I use is from http://xxx.winace.com/. I've never bothered with registration or TrialPay or whatever - I just get an annoying little pop-up telling me that my registration has been exceeded by 825 days...
