Ah, can you please list the dns servers you are using when it works? I have also come to that conclusion, but we are still looking at other possibilities.

I have tried the 151.99.125.1 and 151.99.0.100 (primary and alternate DNS)
and also the 212.216.112.112 and 212.216.172.62 (primary and alternate)

they seem to work (I don't have the "error retrieving update" message)

salut

Thank you very much Felix!

To the users that experience problems with update-retrieval, can you please change your DNS' to the above options and report success or failure?
EDIT: This is done in networking properties in windows, of course, not in Adaware itself. ;)

Thanks

Most people have been using Lavasoft for a considerable amount of time and have not had problems using the automatic update feature until a couple of days ago. It is up to Lavasoft to fix the problem NOT UP TO INDIVIDUAL USERS to screw around with there PC's by trying to change the DNS codes.

We are not asking you to do this as a permanent fix, it is just a way of eliminating possible causes for this error. We haven't been able to reproduce these
issues ourselves, therefor we ask the people who are affected by it to help us with the troubleshooting process.

Thanks for your input

Are the manual update instructions in the Pinned post "Pinned: Ad-Aware Definition Update Problems" still valid?

In addition to consistently getting the "Error retrieving update" message when trying to auto-update I cannot download the defs.zip file from "http://updates.ls-se...blic/defs.zip". I CAN download the file from "http://dlserver.down...blic/defs.zip". Using the file from the second link to manually update works fine. I updated 4 computers this way.

My systems at home AND at work (on a military base behind their secure firewalls and using their dns servers) cannot even find the "http://updates.ls-se...ublic/defs.zip" server listed in the Pinned post. Ping comes back "could not find host". It appears the update server may be down.

The thread you are refering to has now been updated to point to the correct place for a manual download.
Thank you for pointing that out.

For clear instructions on how to manually update the definitions file, see Calamity Jane's message on page 3 of this thread.

Changing your DNS server configuration might do the trick.

Edit the DNS servers used in Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties of your Local Area Connection.

If you use Earthlink as ISP (or ISP owned by Earthlink) you can try this solution (provided by Earthlink) for working your way around the problem:

Good luck ;)

My DNS numbers from my router:

Primary - 207.217.126.81
Secondary - 207.217.77.82

What next? Will changing these affect any of my other programs?

Not if you are using a valid DNS server address.

Check with your Internet Service Provider.

But you might also have a common updating problems not caused by the DNS issue, see instructions in this post.

Apparently, Earthlink's default DNS servers won't allow Ad-Aware to retrieve updates normally. I changed "Obtain DNS server address automatically" option to "Use the following DNS servers" and input 207.69.188.172 (primary) and 207.69.188.171 (alternate) and now Ad Aware updates normally. When I switch back to "obtain DNS server address automatically" I once again get "error retrieving update" message when trying to update Ad Aware definitions. If I were Lavasoft, I'd get on the phone with Earthlink and have them fix their default DNS servers. It is strange that Earthlink's default DNS servers work ok with everything else EXCEPT Ad Aware definition update.

I am glad this happened. Earthlink puts up their own error page when an undefined domain name is keyed in. I was wanting to disable that. The article tells how. It also admits that earthlink is at fault. Read the article!
Anybody know how to update a windows me cable modem connection to these?
207.69.188.172 (East Coast)
207.69.188.171 (West Coast)
West coast people use west first. East coast use east first.

P.S. I can't get these to bypass that error page, nor can I get the AD-Aware update, so don't assume this works.

Could you do one more check for us please?

When using the standard DNS addresses that don´t work for Adaware at the moment:

* Does it work to go to the website for manual update?
* Do you get a ping reply when pinging download.lavasoft.de and/or dlserver.download.lavasoft.com?

Using Earthlink's automatically assigned DNS addresses that do not work for the regular Ad Aware definition update process, I was able to go to the website yesterday and sucessfully got a manual update.

I just tired pinging, using the automatically assigned DNS addresses that are still not working for the regular Ad Aware definition update process, and was sucessful:

Thanks so much for figuring this out. Changing the Primary DNS server from 207.69.188.185 to 207.69.188.171 works. Odd that the article references a change 01/31/07 and everything worked fine until 3/24/07. Also strange that all other programs other than AdAware were unaffected. I assume all the people reporting this recent problem have Earthlink accounts?

I have the free version of AdAware personal 1.06r1 so I figure I can't complain too much. But this nonsense has cost me many hours of time trying to correct, including deleting and reinstalling the prohram several times. I'm now told my definitions are 57-59 days old.

I try to update, and have used avery quick cure in these forums, including calling Earthlink and getting into a huge argument with the tech manager to no avail, but no matter what I do, I get "error connecting to server" every time I try to update, without fail.

The manual updates do not work either, so I'm kind of screwed I guess.

I've used AdAware for many years and this is the first time such a problem has gone on for so long.
I just use Spybot Search and Destroy in the interim, for the spyware.

I hope some kind of fix is in the works.

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
Mike

PS: Why in Gods name is it so hard to edit for spelling. I've lost my post twice?!?!??!

I'm on Earthlink dial up for over a year, and Ad-Aware free since version 6. I have not had a problem last this long either( except for the Authentication Check Beta which I uninstalled).

DNS 207-69-188-185 207-69-188-186. It has updated with no problem through the SE1R162 21.03.2007 definitions.

I just tried to update again and still got the error. I did the manual update per CJ's instructions and it worked fine. I now have SE1R163 26.03.2007. Spybot updates ok too. No problems with any other programs.

I also updated another "ancient" computer today which is on broadband (not Earthlink) using the "check for updates now" in the free version, and it updated ok.
