Ad-Aware had a new update today (Se1r163 26.03.2007)
I just now connected and downloaded the new update - worked fine.
Could you please try again and let us know if the problem is resolved?

Same here, no go on the web update. 'Error retrieving update' I've tried everything including a clean install, still no go.

I have been having the same problem for the past few days, i.e. Error retrieving update, freezes at 5%.
My DNS servers are:

That happened to me too. I had to open up a DOS window (START :: PROGRAMS :: ACCESSORIES :: COMMAND PROMPT), then typed 'ipconfig/all' and the screen didn't disappear.... When I run ipconfig/all, the black screen with numbers flashes for a second, then disappears. ...

Come on Lavasoft! This problem is lasting far too long. When are you going to correct it.
i've been an adaware user since forever. Now I get error messages when I try to update the definitions.

Are they both XP or is one Vista?
Both XP - 1 Home, 1 Pro. Unable to update manually either. Hangs at 5%.

I have also merged the 5 duplicate topics here into one to make it easier for the IT staff to review.
As this problem appears to be affecting some but not others, you may also use the manual update procedure below until the immediate problems with automatic updates are fixed:
Manual Update*
In some circumstances, you may not be able to update the definition file by using WebUpdate. Reasons can include the server being too busy to process update requests, or proxy settings are not configured correctly in Ad-Aware. You can download the reference file manually using the following steps.
1. Close Ad-Aware
2. Download the latest definition file in a ZIP file from Lavasoft's website*
http://dlserver.down...public/defs.zip
3. Save it to a temporary location
4. When complete, unzip the contents of the file, either through your favorite ZIP utility or through built-in support in Windows, to the installation directory of Ad-Aware, which is usually C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\
5. Open Ad-Aware
You can then confirm the latest definition file is installed by looking at the Initialization Status on the main Status screen.

Look for the *New Topic* Button near the top right when viewing the forums.

Uploaded new definitions from work fine (through a proxy). I have found that if you keep trying, eventually it will hang at 5% for a few minutes and eventually upload about one out every twenty attempts. At least the problem does not seem to be with my setup. I have wasted far too much time already trying to correct this from my end.Staff at Lavasoft has been notifed of the problem some of you are experiencing with webupdate. As the time is now in the wee hours of the morning there in Sweden, I doubt they will see it until tomorrow.

Dear C J,
I did 1-4. But it appears that the link was damaged. When I click on it to open it up in the Ad-Aware SE folder, I get this message:
"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\defs.ref the archive is either in unknown format or damaged."
How to proceed? FYI, the file is 1,060 KB.

Is the problem still occuring?
#56
Posted 27 March 2007 - 11:01 AM
Yes it is still occurring for me. I am not using a router. All other programs continue to update fine (AVG, Spybot, java, Winblows, etc), just a problem with autoupdate for AdAware SE. i have not changed my setup and have never experienced this problem before. I have attached my system infor in an earlier post.We are looking into this, it seems to be a problem with some users DNS-servers. Which would indicate a routingproblem from their part. Everything works fine here, and I tested it from home aswell. No problems.
Is the problem still occuring?

Let me get this straight. People who are having the exact same problem are asked to post their DNS servers and I am supposed to try their non-working DNS settings. I am not sure that I have the freedom to choose my DNS as it was assigned with my internet service and my broadband modem will probably not work at all if I change it.Certain ISP's dns servers aren't resolving the hosts correctly, seeing as alot of users are able to update successfully. Try changing your DNS settings in windows to one of the DNS-servers listed earlier in this thread. If it works then please tell us.

I have been having the same problem for the past few days, i.e. Error retrieving update, freezes at 5%.
My DNS servers are:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Cager38
exactly... 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are primary and alternate OpenDNS dns servers...
in the past days, I have the "error retrieving update" problem only when I used these DNS...
when I have changed the dns setting of my pcs, all worked fine...
I begin to think there is a netework problem between the lavasoft update server and some dns servers...
Salut
Felix
