Safe Browsing question
#1
Posted 05 June 2012 - 05:41 AM
I'm running Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ 10.1.211.3382
It's been activated, and I've already turned off Safe Browsing on the main screen, and confirmed that it is not checked at Main > Protection Settings > Safe Browsing
Even so, eny time my connection slows down while I'm loading a page, I get the http://www.pagenotfound.co page.
So how do I get my selected setting of OFF to actually APPLY to Ad-Aware?
This is frustrating enough that I am seriously considering completely eliminating Ad-Aware from my system completely and permanently.

Before I registered the free version switching off the Safe Browsing add-on DID turn it off, and I did not get that screen anymore. Once I registered the free version, the http://www.pagenotfound.co page came back, even though the Safe Browsing add-on was still turned off (along with all of the other Advanced Protection options)

Which web browsers do you have?

before this, it would redirect me to google. In FF, even a forced redirect to google (via about:config -> keyword.URL) doesnt work. I didnt try the other browsers. This annoyed me a lot and I uninstalled AdAware, but the problem still persists. What can I do?

I'm glad you found a solution. Maybe it is possible to install Ad-Aware 10 and then uninstall the "Browsing Protection", if you like the other features of Ad-Aware 10.

Version 10.2 will fix several issues, including those mentioned in this topic, with "Browsing Protection".

I would be grateful if you could help, and also, if possible, point me to a site where I can find an older version of the software. File Hippo doesn't seem to have one.

It is usually not "Safe Browsing" that cause conflicts with other antivirus programs, but the drivers that are part of the real-time protection.
I could download 9.6 at FileHippo a few weeks ago, but I will check again when everything of Ad-Aware 10 has been removed from your computer.
Is it just "www.pagenotfound.co" you mean or are there more/other things left?
Which web browser are you using?
Let us see if DDS finds something that has to do with "Safe Browsing".
Save DDS to your desktop: http://download.blee...om/sUBs/dds.scr
Double-click on the DDS tool to run it.
When finished, DDS will open two (2) logs:
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
Save them to your desktop and paste their content into your answer.
When you have done that I will move your posts and my answer to a new topic since it will be several posts about your problem and some of them will be very long.

I use Vista, Firefox and AVG.
Is 9.6 the right older version? I don't want more software running in the background.

Let us see the settings of Firefox with the help of the program OTL. Save OTL on the Desktop. http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
Close all programs.
Double-click OTL to run it.
Click on Quick Scan and do not use the computer while the program runs.
When the program finishes two log files are created on the Desktop, OTL.txt och Extras.txt. Paste the contents of the log OTL.txt into your answer but attach Extras.txt (if you don't see how to attach files click the button "More Reply Options").

It's always risky to use cracked software, since you don't know what the crack really does. There are free alternatives to MS Office and other programs.
Please, uninstall:
Java 6 Update 31
Java 7 Update 11
Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java 6 Update 4
Java 6 Update 5
Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1 (or upgrade it)
Those are old versions with vulnerabilities, that makes it easy to infect the computer from a web site.
Ask Toolbar, see http://www.systemloo...NERI_1_DLL.html
File sharing software, as uTorrent, is a common source of infections. You are recommended to uninstall it.
Note, that the following script will not only remove left-overs of Ad-Aware but also left-overs of other programs and bad add-ons to browsers, e.g. Ask and Daemon Tools toolbars, and old Java versions.
Close all programs including antivirus programs and other similar programs. Otherwise they might stop OTL.
How? See http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html
Start the program OTL.
Copy all the lines in the box:
:OTL

[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[REBOOT]
Paste them into the field Custom Scans/Fixes. Click on Run Fix.
If you are asked to restart the computer do that.
Notepad will pop-up with a log. Copy it and paste it into your answer.
If it is not pop-upped, you can find it in the folder c:\_OTL\Moved Files and its name contains the date and time for when OTL was run.
Be sure that antivirus programs etc. are active before connecting to internet.

Please, post the OTL log and I will check that OTL could remove what it was supposed to remove. Also run OTL as you did the first time and post that log too, then I can check that I didn't miss anything. You also need instructions on how to uninstall OTL.
