Hi usmhot,
I don't know, but I know that I can try to help you remove it, if Ad-Aware doesn't do it. If you want my help, please follow the instructions in the topic Read This Before You Post! if possible. If you could follow the instructions post the logs and if not tell us what happened when you tried.

Hi CeciliaB,
I'm afraid I've already taken manual steps.
This is a particulalry nasty little bugger - a rogue anti-spyware program. It pretty much prevents anything else from running - including task manager.
Most of the Google searches seem to point to a spyware removal program called MalwareBytes and the fact that it comes up so often makes me nervous.
I find it odd, though, that this one isn't mentioned on the websites of any of the well established and repectable anti-spyware companies like lavasoft.
Anyway, I've removed the files and registry keys (those that were there) according to some online instructions. Hopefully that's caught it.
Would appreciate an update from lavasoft on whether this is being researched. It seems pretty widespread, and it's the first that's ever affected my PC without detection by scheduled scans.
Thanks.

Hi usmhot,
You are welcome
Yes, I have read about Smart Fortress 2012 but the descriptions were one to two month old, and it was possible that it had changed in since then.
Malwarebytes is a company that is a competitor to Lavasoft, why it is not recommended on this website.
I'm only a volunteer here and don't know exactly which malicious programs Ad-Aware can detect and remove.
If you want to have an extra check of the computer, I can read the logs from the programs in Read This Before You Post!.

Hi CeciliaB,
Sorry, I wasn't asking for a recommendation on Malwarebytes .. I was actually saying I was nervous about using it as it was strangely the only one that came up in google searches for Smart Fortress 2012.
I'm running registry cleaing software disk cleanup software and then I'll run a scan with AdAware to see if it turns up anything.

Hi usmhot,
I personally don't recommend the usage of registry cleaning software without deep Windows knowledge, since I have seen many topics about computer problems caused by such programs. They often "clean" too much.

According to my contact person at Lavasoft, Ad-Aware can detect Smart Fortress 2012 but since there are so many variants of it, it is impossible to know if all variants are detected.

There are many variants of Smart Fortress 2012 around unfortunately. Lavasoft would certainly appreciate if you can upload the file you used, devstaff

According to the removal instructions on http://www.bleepingc...t-fortress-2012 MBAM is not enough.
