I am using free Ad-Aware 9.5 to which I upgraded recently (August 28, 2011) from the previous version. It did update the database after installation.
For some time now (I can’t tell how long as I have not run it since installation), when I try to open it, it hangs on “Loading…” and after a minute or two it produces the message: “Connection Error, Failed to connect to service.”
Needless to say that I gave it full access with my firewall.
What’s wrong and how can I correct it?

If it's not in the computer, it doesn't exist.

Hi catsby,
The error message has nothing to do with internet, it is the Ad-Aware program that cannot get information from the Ad-Aware service running in the computer.
Have you another antivirus program that might interfere with Ad-Aware?
http://www.lavasofts...showtopic=26559 is written for an old version of Ad-Aware but it is still rather valid. Please, try the suggestions there.

Thanks a lot CeciliaB, that link you sited fixed it! The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service was disabled. Come to think of it, I must have disabled it myself some time ago to stop Ad-Aware from starting every time, and forgot about it, which I find somewhat embarrassing. Now I’ve just turned the Ad-Watch Live off. And it was not easy to find how to do that, Lavasoft may consider making it more prominent.

You are welcome, catsby!
I am glad it is solved, regardless of the reason.
Maybe Lavasoft does not want persons without computer knowledge to find where to turn off Ad-Watch

I am running 9.6.0 on Windows 7. On occasion, after an update, Ad-Aware.exe produces a message "can't connect to service". When this happens, the ad-aware.exe process is not cancellable, and I have to reboot to clear this situation. My first logged occurence was 27-Jul-2009 on my XP system.
There were 36 occurrences on my XP system and 4 occurrences on Windows 7. The current situation is slightly different than all the previous ones - this time ad-aware.exe terminates instead of being a hung, non-cancellable process. And when I re-start Ad-Aware, I get the same message. Are there any diagnostic tools I can run on my system to diagnose the problem? I do not plan to reboot just to get ad-aware back so that I can do a scan; I will not reboot until something else forces a reboot, probably in two weeks on patch Tuesday. Thanks.
P.S. In a post previous to this, the poster, I believe, assumed that the service to which Ad-Aware could not connect was on the Internet. This is not the case. Ad-Aware.exe had finished its defnition updates and is re-starting. It is trying to re-connect to the piece of Ad-Aware that is always running (aawservice?). In my case now, adawarebp.exe is running, aawservice is not running..

Hi B. FInkel,
Have you tried to start "Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service" (aawservice) according to the page I linked to in post #2?
There are log files in one of the Ad-Aware folders, but with Ad-Aware version 10 in beta test I think a problem in version 9 will get low priority (since it is not a common problem).
