I think that I have Ad-Aware 9.0 Free installed and working. However, I don't have any icon in the Systray for it. I've tried unchecking and rechecking the "notification area icon" in Settings > Customize, both with and without a reboot in between. No luck either way. AAWServices.exe shows up as a process in Task Manager, but no AAWTray.exe listing.
System Information:
ThinkPad T42 1.7GHz Pentium M / Centrino, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 7500 with 32MB VRAM
Windows XP SP3 with all current high-priority updates installed
Online Armor Free Firewall 5.0
1. Suggestions on getting the icon to show up?
2. If not:
a. Is it necessary to exit or shut down AAW to install a program?
b. If so, how to do it without a Systray icon?
No Tray Icon

Hi uncertain_lurker,
Is it possible that you installed Ad-Aware from one user account and now is using another account?
Is it same behaviour even after a restart of the computer?
What happens if you go to the Ad-Aware folder and manually start AAWtray.exe?

Hi CeceliaB -
Yes, I installed AAW9 from an administrator account, but there was no tray icon under either that account or my limited user account, even after restarting and logging onto either account.
I didn't think of running AAWTray.exe directly. I did so and Online Armor (firewall) asked if I wanted it to run, to which I said yes, and the icon appeared. However, I still didn't get the tray icon under either account after restarting, so I went into C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and created a shortcut to AAWTray.exe.
Problem solved. I now have a tray icon under either account. Apparently I was a bit too worried about AAW being a security program to apply first principles. However, if my solution is actually weakening my security, I would appreciate being so informed. Thank you.
P.S.: AAWTray.exe and AAWServices.exe are the only running AAW processes that I can see. If anything else should be running, please let me know.

Hi uncertain_lurker,
I believe that Online Armor stopped Ad-Aware installation program to enter the automatic start of AAWTray since you got a question when you started it manually.
You have found a very good solution to the problem
