Hello,
While d/ling Windows Live Messenger a couple months back Ad-Aware caught "win32.Trojan.Inject" sneaking in with it, it said it was bad and that I should use the quarantine function, so I did and everything seemed fine... However, in the last couple weeks my laptop started showing all the symptoms of having the trojan infection. I followed all your recommended steps-before-posting, although the gmer log file was completely blank (I guess it didn't find anything?). So here's the hijackthis log...

Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated :)

Cookies are not dangerous for the computer. They are removed because they keep information about what you have done on internet, for example which ads have you seen and clicked on.

Can you describe the symptoms of your laptop?

The Gmer log should never be completely empty, there is always a header in it.

Save DDS to your desktop: http://download.blee...om/sUBs/dds.scr
Double-click on the DDS tool to run it.

When finished, DDS will open two (2) logs:
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt

Save them to your desktop and paste their content into your answer.

Hi CeciliaB,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think cookies were an issue, Ad-Aware usually just does its thing with them anyway I assume, but it did specifically describe the win32.Trojan.Inject file as 'malware'.
Symptoms... Very slow start-up, programs very slow to open (as opposed to say a couple months ago when things were very speedy! I only just got the computer in October), freezes, usually while I'm online at least twice a day, I end up having to hold the power button down to turn to shut down. When it comes out of screen saver mode it takes forever to decide to let me move the mouse around, and I sometimes have to shut it down manually at this point and reboot. And finally, occasional 'blue screen of death'.

Should I run the gmer scan again??

Thanks! :)

ps
Apologies if it seems like I haven't the slightest idea what I'm doing, it would be a very accurate assumption! Here's the blurb Ad-Aware gives me under 'more info' in the quarantine section...

"Win32.Trojan.Inject is a malware which injects itself into legitimate processes. It may run behind processes as svchost.exe, iexplorer.exe and rundll32.exe. While running protected by another process it may contact remote domains to download malwares. It's purpose is to hide itself from the visible processes and infect the user's system."

Did you download Windows Live Messenger from Microsofts download site or from some other page? It is always a possibility that it was a false positive.

The symptoms can also be due to a bad hard disk. Did your computer manufacturer install a diagnostic program or do you want to have a link to a test program?
Be sure that you have backups of all your important files.

Ad-Aware version 8.3 and 9 contains an antivirus program. You should only have one antivirus program running since having two running could lead to conflicts and various problems, including a slow computer. http://www.lavasoft....irus-protection
http://www.lavasofts...s...st&p=124418 describes how to turn off the real-time protection.

I would love such a link!

I uninstalled AVG which I also had running (I have Ad-Aware 9 so I assume I'm safe?) and things seem to be smoother. :) Should I hang on to all these new programs I've downloaded?

I got the messenger program here: http://explore.live....senger?os=other

I am sorry, but I cannot tell you if you should use AVG or Ad-Aware as antivirus program. Since Ad-Aware with antivirus is rather new there are very few tests of it. I believe your AVG contained a firewall but Ad-Aware free doesn't, you should therefore install one from another company. Online Armor, PC Tools and Comodo has free and very good firewalls.

Since you downloaded Messenger from the official website, it must have been a false positive.

Test hard disk with the testprogram its manufacturer has published. If you don't know who manufactured it check the Device Manager (right-click on Computer - Management), there should be an article number that you can google to get the manufacturer.
Use the page http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287 to find the test program, it is usually easier than trying to locate it on the manufacturers website.

You can delete Gmer, DDS programs and their logs, but HijackThis should be uninstalled in Control Panel. The programs are often updated so don't keep them.

Improve the security in the computer
It is very important to keep Windows and all programs updated. To help you with that you can use the program Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI).

Read what Blade81 writes in the post http://www.lavasofts...s...st&p=124337 from the header "Make your Internet Explorer more secure" and downwards.

Hello again,
I cleaned up and downloaded the suggested programs and things seem to be speeding up and I am thus far crash free! I followed as many of Blade 81's suggestions as I could, although I was wondering if there is a similar set of steps for making Mozillla Firefox more secure? Also I couldn't help but notice the bit about resetting the Restore stuff... Is that something I should be doing too? Are there steps for Windows 7 specifically that I should take??

I am so thankful for all your help!

You are welcome. :)

Also I couldn't help but notice the bit about resetting the Restore stuff... Is that something I should be doing too?

That is only if the computer really has been infected, so no need for you to do that.

You will improve the security of Firefox by installing the add-on NoScript: https://addons.mozil...refox/addon/722
The hosts file that Blade81 writes about improves security in all browsers.

With Windows 7 it is important to keep UAC (User Access Control) at a high level for best security. I cannot remember anything else that is special for Windows 7.
