I am starting a new topic so as not to confuse the issues in another thread. I can't get the Web update to work. I keep getting the message " Connection error, check your settings (Errorcode -1)" I have read the pinned thread regarding connection problems and followed the instructions there and have uninstalled and reinstalled Ad-Aware free twice now, but he results are the same - the error message as per above.

Curiously on each reinstallation before the reboot, Ad-Aware contacted the server and got the latest updates. After the reboot and Ad-Aware start, the error message appears when I try to do the manual Web update. I realize there may not be any updated files since I have just installed Ad-Aware but I still should not receive that error message. Help!

Can someone veify that they can get updates so I can eliminate a problem with the Lavasoft servers? Prior to yesterday, the updates worked fine. For reference I am running WinXP.

Thanks, in advance for any help.

Just installed version 9.0 of Ad-Aware free which was automatic. However the error message as per above still occurs!

I opened a bug thread for Lavasoft. I'm having problems with downloading the definitions file - the usual link still has defs from Dec 01, so it's possible they changed server locations which is affecting both the def file download and the Web Update function. Hopefully we'll hear something soon!

Nothing from Lavasoft yet on the error message - but you can manually update:

Thanks so much for your update. I have been doing manual updates but that is a bit cumbersome at best.

Hello!

Manual updates are working fine but I haven't got automatic updates since 2 weeks! Where can I edit the update settings? I like Ad-Aware but without automatic updates it's nearly useless ...

To check your settings, make sure you're in Advanced Mode, then click on Settings -> Updates to make sure "Get updates automatically" is checked.

Hello,

how can I set the update time to 19:00? I read that the update time is a "secret" and there is no way to change it - I can't believe it :o

In prior versions, update occurred at the time of the original installation - you can try a clean uninstall, then install at the desired time. But as far as I know, you cannot set the update time. Lavasoft did this to randomize the times, so their servers would not all be overloaded at popular times, especially in the US.

That may explain why on my many attempts to re-install, Ad-Aware would always update the definitions prior to the rebooting of the computer. I am not sure it explains why I cant do a manual update from within the program. Also if I download new definition files, the date of the update does not change on the main status page.

If I turn off the automatic update option and try the updates manually from withing the program I still get the same cryptic error message (I posted a screenshot in a prior message.) It would be nice if the message were a bit more informative to the user! Something like "Servers are busy" or "set updates to manual to update now" if that is indeed the problem, would be better than " Connection error, check your settings (Errorcode -1)"

As an aside, I have tried manual updates (not the download file) from withing the program at various times, including the middle of the night here in the US. The same result no matter if it is 03:00 or 15:00 hours!

If this is not a bug, than it is a major change in the way the program operates from previous versions like SE and Special Edition. Lavasoft should have certainly notified their users of that major change!!!

I am going to wait a while and see if the automatic update works and if not I hear Malwarebytes is a good program and I already use Spybot Search and Destroy and have no problems with that.

Yes, the date shown on the GUI only changes with auto-update or update through the GUI, but not by manually installing the definitions - this has been the same since Anniversary Edition 8.0.x

MBAM has a good reputation, and I use it along with Spybot too. But note that MBAM does not have real-time protection, only scans. And both MBAM and Spybot are considered anti-malware, not anti-virus, so you may want to use another anti-virus program such as Avast.

Thanks for your reply - very informative! When I used the Anniversery edition, the manual updates always worked from within the GUI so I never had to download them and install them manually.

I already use Avast and find it to be an excellent anti-virus program so I don't need another anti-virus program and I have AV turned off in Ad-Aware. I once had Norton' blatware and got so tired of the way it hogs resources, not to mention the nags to renew the subscription way before it was due. Also Norton's customer service was appauling.

Still no automatic updates. Same error message as noted in prior post in this thread when trying to do a manual update. Since the error message states " Connection error, check your settings (Errorcode -1)", does anyone know what settings to check and what errorcode -1 means?

I think I may have found the solution to my problem. Instead of trying to manually update from within the GUI, I went to the start menu and clicked the Ad-Aware Updates icon and did not get the error message. No updates were available but that is ok because I had just done yet another reinstall. I then re-started Ad-Aware and tried a manual update and lo and behold - no error message but a message that "Software is already up to date." I can't explain why it now works but it looks like the error message is gone!

The "check your settings" is just a generic message meaning to check firewalls, modems, etc. for internet connection. Glad you got it to work - in the past, I've recommended the start menu, but usually unsuccessfully (or the user didn't bother to try). Thanks for the info, hope it works next time when an update is available!
