For some time I have been unable to get Windows updates. As Windows shuts down and tries to update, I see the same 4 updates every time. When I attempted to do updates manually from Microsoft, I got an error message concerning the Hosts file (don't remember exactly what, but I beleive it said the Hosts file couldn't be written to. I've downloaded the most recent Adaware (per directions from Lavasoft support, including thorough uninstall), apparently successfully, althought Revouninstall couldn't accomplish step (1) - couldn't create a restore point. During the Adaware install process, the latest updates seemed to be downloading. But Adaware will not run - I get the startup screen for about a couple of minutes, then an error message saying service could not be started. Tried to start Adaware Service in the Safe mode, but failed ("Could not start client security service on local computer. Error 1084 This service cannot be started in safe mode") .

Lavasoft recommend I try to restore to a previous date. Trying to do this resulted in Windows give an error message and saying it needed to shut down. Re-starting didn't help. At this point Lavasoft support said my Windows installation was corrupt and I needed to go to this forum.

During the preparation for this posting, OTM gave an error message when I clicked the Moveit button: - said it couldn't create the Hosts file, then locked up. I had to turn the computer off (and it took several cold reboots to get windows to start successfully) . Opened OTM and t showed a notepad file: "Files moved on reboot. Registry entries deleted on reboot"

When I started GMER, I got a message: "LoadDriver(C:\cocumen~2\DPM\Locals~1\Temp\pxldaop.sys")error 0x0000034: Access denied.GMER said it hasn't found any system modification The GMER.TXT file was empty.

When I started the scan in HijackThis, I got an error message saying my system denied access to the Hosts file. When I looked in the windows\....\etc\ directory, I found 2 Hosts files. One that windows calls a "file" and one it calls an "iCalendar file". The first appears to be the dfault Hosts file; the second is left over from an attempt to dump the state fo my computer to Microsoft (it hung up in the process and Micorsoft never got back to me).

Here is the first Hosts file:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.68 NPI915105

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds file to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.
