GarySheehan,

how often do you use the WebUpDate feature as I recommend that you use it every time just before you scanthat way you will always have the latest Definition file

GRAFX Posted Image

That's exactly what I do. I haven't scanned my work PC for......236 days ;)

However, that still doesn't explain why we can only download up to 2/5/06.

if your webupdate has ceased to function, it could be that a malware has comprimised your HOSTS file, which is used to override DNS requests (name to IP address translation)

Run an ad-aware scan and see if Ad-Aware picks up anything when it scans the hosts file

otherwise you can manually open the hosts file with notepad

This file's location is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

if you see any referenced to lavasoft download servers, then you can delete these lines. Some malwares will add an entry in the hosts file that cause anti-virus / anti-spyware software to connect to the wrong IP address

If this fails, then you should try downloading the definitions manually from
http://download.lava...public/defs.ref
or
http://209.87.177.246/public/defs.ref

When you have downloaded the definition file, go to "Settings" -> "General", and click the "Using Definition File" button. Then browse to the file to open the one you downloaded.... you should place the definition file in your Ad-Aware program folder, usually c:\program files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Something\

Thanks

//Steve

;) Hey, thanks ROB P! You put me on the right track that took me to a solution for my problem.

I also have NIS on my computer, so I tried to check the firewall. It was messed up; there was no icon for it in my tray, and I couldn't open it from the start menu, and my computer would not shut down normally.

I powered off and back on and everything was working. I hardly ever shut down my computer since upgrading to WinXP, so I didn't think about this old solution that used to solve 90% of the problems with Win98.

I also am having the same problem.

I have tried with both Win 2000 and XP systems, hosts file is clean. Normal update does not work as mentioned in the FAQ but I am unable to connect to the webpage that contains the .defs file, it just times out.

However, at work, I have no problem. The difference here is that I have just Symantec AntiVirus not InternetSecurity running. I have both running at home, so it has something to do with the firewall. However, it is configured to allow everything from LavaSoft and even disabling InternetSecurity for the download does not affect the results.

I copied the .defs file from work and will try to load it tonight at home, but it is interesting that I've only had problems with this new .defs file. Could it have anything to do with the latest hack into LavaSoft? Such as new protections added to the .defs file?

I'll keep in touch.

Glad to have helped. I was able to downloed the latest.def file, copy it to a memory stick and successfully load it on my PCs at home. Now that there is a new version available I'll try it from home first.

An interesting sdie note. when I put my memory stick in my PC at home a trojan virus was immediately detected and removed. I worried that my PC at work was infected (although I scan every night) but could not find one. Is it possible that the trojan came from this infected file that Lavasoft is now releasing a Beta for?

I've installed the beta and will do so at home as well.
