To which drive are you trying to install Ad-Aware, the default Windows drive?

I will ask to see if any of the other volunteers here have seen it, but it will be helpful if we can learn a little more about your PC configuration.
How did you uninstall 2008, did it uninstall successfully?
What other security software do you have installed on your computer?
Have you tried installing to another drive or partition to see if the program will install?
Have you experienced this error, or similar, with installing other software?
What versions of flash and macromedia do you have installed?
and anything else you may think is useful to us.

Looks like a common thread may be that joanev and gearloose both have Asus PCs. I wonder if something pre-installed causes the error? Google results point to DRM (like Wal-Mart's MP3 downloader) registry entries:

had a look at those links but...
not sure what they mean...bit past my level of expertise
Any other ideas?

DRM is Digital Rights Management, a form of copy protection. When Sony first implemented DRM, they received a lot of criticism that it acted like a rootkit (a form of malware) without notifying the user.had a look at those links but...
not sure what they mean...bit past my level of expertise
The user in the other links who experienced the Macrovision error tried to uninstall the MP3 downloader, but it left registry entries behind which needed to be removed manually. You shouldn't try it unless you feel comfortable and backup your registry beforehand.
My post was really just taking a stab at the problem and may be meaningless if ASUS doesn't install such DRM from the factory and if the user(s) haven't intstalled something like Walmart's MP3 downloader.

It would definitely seem like a connection with Asus PCs. I will have a look into this tomorrow (it's late at night for me now).

Could you uninstall any previous version of Ad-Aware, using Revo.
Install the latest version of Ad-Aware, Ad-Aware 8.1.
Let's see if we still get this issue.

Had to re-install Ad-Aware 2008 first as new version had uninstalled all (or part of it)
Uninstalled 2008 using Revo
restarted PC
Attempted install of Ad-Aware 8.1 - same error
Also unistalled Superantispyware & Malwarebytes (Revo) just in case there were conflicts
restarted PC
Attempted re-install of Ad-Aware 8.1 - same error
While the actual error message is as per above, the actual install screen stops at
Folder c:\Documents and settings\ReleaseEngineer.MACROVISION\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\QuickLaunch
Isn't there a character limit on the size of a path?
I've come across similar issue (although not the same message) when trying to backup files
Also not sure if this is an help but the ASUS programs that came loaded with the PC are:
ASUS CopyProtect
ASUS InstantFun
ASUS Lifeframe3
ASUS Live Update
ASUS Security Protect Manager
ASUS SmartLogon
ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology
ASUS CAmera ScreenSaver
cheers Gearloose

Or maybe set a system restore point and then uninstall it?
See if this solves the problem?
