I have Asus with Vista 32bit and I have djust done a total recovery of my computer. I did have Ad-aware 2008 with no complication but now I tryed to install Ad-aware AE. All Windows Update where done before this and most other programs.
I got "Error. The specifIed path is too long C:\dokument and Setting\Release Engineer.MACROVISION"
Any solution?

OK, thanks. It's just I have never heard of this problem before and so I did some research and other programs have experienced this issue and it was often due to not installing to the default Windows drive.

I will ask to see if any of the other volunteers here have seen it, but it will be helpful if we can learn a little more about your PC configuration.

How did you uninstall 2008, did it uninstall successfully?
What other security software do you have installed on your computer?
Have you tried installing to another drive or partition to see if the program will install?
Have you experienced this error, or similar, with installing other software?
What versions of flash and macromedia do you have installed?

and anything else you may think is useful to us.

Ditto with me too - same error message when trying to install Anniversary edition (free) ie
The specified path is too long c:\documents and settings\ReleaseEngineer.MACROVISION

Haven't uninstalled 2008 as yet?
Have been running 2008 with absolutely no problems
Other security software
MalwareBytes
Spybot
AVG
Superantispyware

Standard/default instalation

Asus PC with Vista 32 bit

Advice very much appreciated

Thks

Looks like a common thread may be that joanev and gearloose both have Asus PCs. I wonder if something pre-installed causes the error? Google results point to DRM (like Wal-Mart's MP3 downloader) registry entries:

DRM is Digital Rights Management, a form of copy protection. When Sony first implemented DRM, they received a lot of criticism that it acted like a rootkit (a form of malware) without notifying the user.

The user in the other links who experienced the Macrovision error tried to uninstall the MP3 downloader, but it left registry entries behind which needed to be removed manually. You shouldn't try it unless you feel comfortable and backup your registry beforehand.

My post was really just taking a stab at the problem and may be meaningless if ASUS doesn't install such DRM from the factory and if the user(s) haven't intstalled something like Walmart's MP3 downloader.

Just read your PM Gearloose.

It would definitely seem like a connection with Asus PCs. I will have a look into this tomorrow (it's late at night for me now).

Hmm... seems to be a very rare error and Google has little on it. I agree with visitor though, and it sounds like it is due to some other software installation (which has possibly come pre-installed on Asus PCs).

Could you uninstall any previous version of Ad-Aware, using Revo.

Install the latest version of Ad-Aware, Ad-Aware 8.1.

Let's see if we still get this issue.

HI there Casey
Had to re-install Ad-Aware 2008 first as new version had uninstalled all (or part of it)
Uninstalled 2008 using Revo
restarted PC
Attempted install of Ad-Aware 8.1 - same error

Also unistalled Superantispyware & Malwarebytes (Revo) just in case there were conflicts
restarted PC
Attempted re-install of Ad-Aware 8.1 - same error

While the actual error message is as per above, the actual install screen stops at
Folder c:\Documents and settings\ReleaseEngineer.MACROVISION\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\QuickLaunch

Isn't there a character limit on the size of a path?
I've come across similar issue (although not the same message) when trying to backup files

Also not sure if this is an help but the ASUS programs that came loaded with the PC are:
ASUS CopyProtect
ASUS InstantFun
ASUS Lifeframe3
ASUS Live Update
ASUS Security Protect Manager
ASUS SmartLogon
ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology
ASUS CAmera ScreenSaver

cheers Gearloose

Can you try disabling these, most interestingly the copy protect?

Or maybe set a system restore point and then uninstall it?

See if this solves the problem?
