I installed AE over 2008 and everything seemed fine, but after reboot the program would not start. Clicking the start button showed the hourglass for a few seconds, but then just quit. There was no indication of any problems or error messages during the installation or when trying to start the program.

Next I uninstalled AE, rebooted the computer, emptied the temp folder, downloaded another copy of the installer, turned off COMODO Internet Security and reinstalled AE. The results were exactly the same as previously described.

That's exactly my experience. I installed/uninstalled 3 times and so far have been unable to see any activity after right and/or left clicking on the AE icon in the task bar or on the exe file in the AE folder. Is there supposed to be any observable activity after clicking on the icon?

I'm experiencing the same problem; however, I'm running it on Windows 2000 Pro. I have deleted with REVO 3 times and reloaded 4 times and I still can't open the program. Is the old 2008 version still available? I'm ready to give up on the new version

Count me among the dejected. After reading this thread, I deleted Aware AE, restarted and let ccleaner clean the registry. I will now make one more attempt at installation, however I feel an hour is enough time to have spent on this problem.

I like Aware, however I feel the authors have not addressed this issue sufficiently. Hope they contact me if and when a working copy is available.

The above solved the problem. AE now functions.

I have had a variation on this problem, I downloaded Ae onto my main computer and it is working fine, but on my backup computer all went well until I did a restart to complete the installationwhen my XP had almost completed the shutdown I got the "Programme not responding" message which was immediately covered by a pop up with a message about a missing/lost file, one with a lot of 0s in it, the reboot then continued normally, on rebooting I got a flag telling me to reboot to complete the installation, several reboots later the problem still persists. I have done a scan but it still shows up as no scans done yet.
I contacted my local "Fix it' man who is having the same problem I am having, his advice is to either uninstall or put up with it for a few days until Lavasoft come up with a fix.
Syd.

Similar experience here - except my pc would not shut down after AdAware Anniversary was installed. Ended up completely uinistalling everything to do with AdAware, after restoring pc to earlier date, finally got pc back running and starting and shutting down properly. I am leaving ALL AdAware off my pc's - it just not worth the hassle.

Yes, I too just uninstalled it. AE froze entire new Vista PC twice. As posted elsewhere, had to do a hard (power off) reboot. Will try it again in a few weeks.

Same Here! I installed the new AE over the 2008 and all seemed ok until I clicked on OPEN, seen hourglass for few seconds and no open! I tried un-installing and re-installing 3 times and same! I tried to find the old 2008 for re-install and cannot even locate a re-do of 2008!

Anyone got any work-arounds, etc??? :)

Maybe of little help, but my story of AE and my neighbours' PC.

I upgraded their PC to AE and it didn't run. Simple solution turned out to be aawservices was turned to disabled in services.

As for those who don't find it there, it's under the name of "Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service" - I switched it to automatic, rebooted and AE runs perfectly!

I've tried everything suggested here, and no luck:

* AAW Service was not there, so I never removed it.
* Ran all the utilities suggested (Revo on most aggressive setting, CCleaner, Win Install Cleanup)
* rebooted and reinstalled, multiple times, both using the default, and the advanced (did not install the optional service).

Nothing works. Running XP Home Ed. on latest patch level.

One thing I noticed:

When I execute the program, the hour glass spins, then nothing, but a process called "Ad-Aware.exe" runs for a minute or so (and shows in the Processes tab in Task Mgr), then shuts down.

I surrender. Anyone know where I can get the previous version?

TIA.

* Ran all the utilities suggested (Revo on most aggressive setting, CCleaner, Win Install Cleanup)

1. Make sure you've uninstalled Ad Aware - All instances.
1a. REBOOT
2. When you run Ccleaner, use the registry fix option, not the cleaner. Make sure you've let it remove everything related to Ad Aware.
3. REBOOT
4. Install Ad Aware.

If that doesn't work, go to download.com and search for AVG. By the way, while on download.com, read all the most recent user evaluations of Ad Aware.

Followed your instructions, step-by-step. Same failed result. DL'ed AVG and it's running now.

FYI - before I read your note, I re-installed AdAware 2008 (URL Removed) and it installed and ran perfectly.

Thanks for the response and re-direction.

you have got to use command prompt
type into command prompt: sc query aawservice
when it finds it type sc delete aawservice
then reinstall ad aware and reboot when the installation says to do so

Have had the same problem and it seems aawservice.exe is the culprit.
Having uninstalled/reinstalled several times I contacted support who linked me to this post. After reading all the comments I decided to take a simple approach. I reinstalled my 2008 Pro from original download. I recall having to use Task Manager, sorry am using XP3, and seeing aawservice.exe on the process list. Again I uninstalled my version 2008 Pro using Lavasoft uninstall and checked Task Manager to find aawservice.exe still running. Highlight, hit end process, confirm.
Reinstall new Anniversary Edition, no problems, all running as expected.
Something I noted. whether or not it has any thing to do with this issue, is that the old process was aaservice.exe and that is now replaced with AAWService.exe. Do caps matter ?
Hope this may help

Had the same problem 4 times. I had Winpatrol on, so turned it off, then it loaded and came "on" fine, but, even tho it will scan, and the window for Update as well as for Threat Report, they won't update nor run the threat report to lavasoft....?????

I did as suggested for updates and just manually downloaded it to the file it suggested, but it ended up in some weird file somewhere else; no adaware update!

What the heck? Any suggestions? Would the suggestion for making it "come on" be a fix for this as well? I mean, since you actually put a file to download instead of using the Update, suggests you knew there is/was a problem...???

Thanks for any help I can get....I love the lavasoft program, but this one is a nightmare for me! :(

I'm really fed up of trying to install and unistall this Ad-Aware AE like for milion times. I'm running two computers, one with Vista and another with XP. It works fine on Vista, but on XP it will not start after installation. I did query through the command promt with no luck, I downloaded REVO and CCLEANER and clean registry and all other things that these twoo programs can do. But no luck. After 3 days of trying... I downloaded AE agian....and gus what... "great change" happend. When I tried to run the program, small window appear with Lavasoft logo with word LOADING below........ after 3 seconds window disapear and the program will not start as befor.

Yeah, great work. I have to say 2008 version was really great work. But sorry.. AE is unfinished job.

I have been having the same problem. I have no services that have anything to do with lavasoft or ad aware going. In fact it doesn't even show on my system. I purchased and downloaded AE. When I install even with custom I keep getting an error saying there is a problem with a display icon, and then the install doesn't even show in my system. So I can not get anything to work. Any thoughts?

To those running Comodo Firewall with Defense+, the problem is within Defense+. The only way for you guys to get it to run, is to uninstall CIS and then reinstall it again.

As far as I know, is a known issue between Defense+ and Ad-aware service. The service won't run.

I also noticed that if you set Ad-aware service to manually start, then if an upgrade happens, the same will happen.

I hope this helps those using Comodo.

I use COMODO with Defense+. It is not necessary to uninstall/reinstall COMODO. Simply remove the *dead* service from the services list after thoroughly uninstalling the previous version of Ad-Aware. That has also been the consensus of opinion throughout this post.
