I'm a total novice, just got used comp. with Adaware on it. when I try to update it will not accept updates, says error update retrival. What I have scans and seems to work. What do I need do to properly update for thorough protection? Please remember I'm totally inexperienced, I barely managed to get this far.

Hello, iceberg :).

The version you have is completely out of date. Lavasoft have gone to a new software package Ad-Aware 2008.

I suggest you download the free version from the home page of Lavasoft http://www.lavasoft.com - remove the old SE version and install the new software.
regards, Peter.

If you scroll down you can either send me a "FASTREPLY" or "ADDREPLY". Try that and see how you go. If you get stuck just post a new topic again and I will add more information. We will delete any posts that are no longer relevant.

Don' worry, we all had to start at some stage. :)

Iceberg here. Thank you for getting me this far. I'm a middle aged dude who never touched one of these gadgets before and it's all confusing as get out! I'm trying. You answered my first post by telling me to install Ad-Aware 2008 and uninstall the old SE version I have. I really want to, but don't know how--one part was to turn off security--I have no idea how. I have AVG, SpyBot as well, those updated themselves. This is a used computer that had these programs, however; SpyBot and AdAware seem to have been 'turned off', as no activity showed for 650 days! SpyBot updated, obviously I need to replace the old AdAware SE. I found AdAware uninstall box in 'programs'. I wish there was a manual how to navigate this forum, I'm probably doing a lot wrong?! I don't know how this works, but would gladly contact via E-mail if viable.

Iceberg, before we do anything we will need to know what version of Windows you are running and if all the Microsoft updates have been installed. Till we know this there is not much we can do for now. Will you please post back with that information. Thank you.

Hi,

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

then find ad-aware on the list and click uninstall (at the top). When you have done this, download the new version of ad-aware from here, save the file to your desktop. When it has downloaded double click the file and install it.

Should you run into any troubles, let us know,

Casey

As advised by C uninstall. old SE, worked. Tried click HERE link, sent on tangent mirror site, wound up mixed up with Cleaning Window Registry Maint. Sammsoft Optimizer 5.1-no AdAware!!!! This thing downloaded, did scan, found 500+ (errors) , supposedly free! Then wanted payment to fix!! Is this some type of scam? Couldn't exit, wouldn't let me leave if I didn't BUY! I hit start button on pros. and manually shut off comp. Restarted, went to 'programs' and uninstalled this thing!! Tried again for AdAware 2008. This time loaded to comp. as C directed, clicked on and successfully installed. (I think)Have icons on screen, ran full scan, 18 privacy obj. removed, ran smart scan, 2 mru busted. Says 7.1.0.11. During scan box app. "virtual memory too low????" Full scan 50min. 39sec., smart scan 30min. 42sec. Did I win one or get my ###### kicked? Is there a manual how to navigate this forum, I'm still floundering just to figure how to do THIS.

I have no idea if this is the way to do this, darn u need a manual for us newbies; I made a post describing my experience, and just was asking if I'm OK now or if I messed up with the Cleaning window thing.

Hi,

Sorry you had trouble with the installation. The link does direct to another mirror - this is where you download the free version. But I am glad you have sorted it out.

To prevent the virtual memory error, there are some things you can do:

Ad-Aware > Settings > Scanning > tick "run scan as a background process"
Ad-Aware > Settings > Scanning > cross "display progress bar"

and when you run a scan, do not run anything else at the same time.

Apart from that, you seem to be ok :) and don't worry - you'll get the hang of the forum in time

Casey

Thanks to the help and patience of some members, I actually got rid of the old SE and installed the new 2008 ver. Phew! I do have some questions I couldn't find clear enough answers to.
Scheduler: If schedule scan for wee morn. hrs. does AdA. 'handle' or remove or must I check to see?
Scan: Is it automatic or must I manually initiate. What's the best way?
Quarantine: What is it? Must I empty-delete-or ignore?
Scheduled Scan: If I figure out how to set this up, must comp. be left on all night?
(please don't groan, I wouldn't ask if I knew!)

Hopefully this will answer your questions.

Q Scheduler: If schedule scan for wee morn. hrs. does AdA. 'handle' or remove or must I check to see?

A No, you will have to remove any removals.

Q Scan: Is it automatic or must I manually initiate. What's the best way?

A You can do it both ways manual or automatic.

Q Quarantine: What is it? Must I empty-delete-or ignore?

A Quarantine them. Hopefully you will not get any.

Q Scheduled Scan: If I figure out how to set this up, must comp. be left on all night?

A Yes, you will have to leave PC powered up all night.

For any information you require when AAW is running, click on '?' and you will get a help file where all the answers should be. Use the search function for that.

As for this forum there is a "Help' function available at the top right hand side, just click it and enter your search item and click search.

I have merged this with the rest of your items. Just keep coming back here and ask again. Don't worry we all had to start somewhere. :) :)
regards, Peter.

Ah, patient Peter I'm back again. My quarentine box is full of junk, what and how do I deal with it?
Wether this concerns this situation???? I can't use Word or WordPad, always stopped by "runtime errors" ???? Saves file, but in format I can't access. Can you hint where I can seek answer?

Iceberg, you can delete these by using the following screen shot I have included. You must delete them straight after a scan and possibly also reboot your PC. Some items will not be removed till you do the latter.

[attachment=5842:AAW_Quar.jpg]

Click on delete if you have any errors in 'Quarantine' then click on 'Ignore list' and you can either 'Delete' or 'Ignore'. I usually click on 'Delete' for 'Quarantine' and 'Ignore' for the 'Ignore list'.

Hope this helps you.

Like here.

Have another go. It may make more sense now. :)
