ok, well something real fishy is going on...i tried to update lavasoft definition files manually by downloading the core zip and extracting it into the lavasoft folder. well that didnt work because when i opened adaware in safe mode it said it was using 137 and not 141 or the latest version. so i tried to reinstall lavasoft with the latest version, i tried to do this in safe mode and it said that you cannot install software in safemode, it wouldnt even run the installer. so i decided to try to run the installer off of a flash drive, the installer actually ran this time but then got a popup saying access denied or something. ok so now im in safe mode and i tried to end several svchost processes. as soon as i shut them all down, there was one left, and it would give me a "access denied" error, so i looked in the services tab, and the corresponding service for this svchost process was something called ProfSvc or something. As soon as I tried to shut that down, it said access denied, and then it logged me off in an instant! im talking like 5 seconds i got logged off, it said logging you off. i can't connect to my network in safemode with networking but i can in windows. can somebody tell me is it possible to install software in safemode?

Hello Moss,

Some malware can actually prevent Ad-Aware from running even if you could get it installed. Please go ahead and post your HijackThis log so we can take a look at what might be going on.
Please do NOT send Private Messages to Staff or helpers to request assistance! We do not give a personal support via PM The way to request help is to post a NEW TOPIC in the appropriate forum.

i also forgot to mention that inside safe mode, when i tried to update ad-aware, the manual update browse to folder option was greyed out, inaccessible.

Nothing suspicious in your log.

Let's get a second opinion from this free on AV scan. Why an online scan? In case your resident AV might have missed something or perhaps even disabled by a malware infection. This will also tell me if any system files may be infected.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, please

Please do NOT send Private Messages to Staff or helpers to request assistance! We do not give a personal support via PM The way to request help is to post a NEW TOPIC in the appropriate forum.
