My problem started a month or so ago, my PC just keeps restarting on its own for no reason seemingly after being on for a few minutes(varies, sometimes longer but over time it got to the point where it would shut after 5-10 minutes every time) as well as barely even running, by the time the startup process finishes its off almost everytime. When Im in safe mode everything is just running slow but the reboot doesnt occur at least. Theres also usually distortions on the right side of the monitor almost like someone is holding a cell phone there or something, Im not sure it its related or not but it didnt start until after the other problems did.

It was detected in Norton as irc.backdoor.trojan:

Unresolved Threats:
IRC.Backdoor.Trojan
Virus ID: 36096
Type: Compressed
Risk: High (High Stealth, High Removal, High Performance, High Privacy)

Nothing else seems to be picking it up though and now its not even coming up in Norton on safe mode(only way I can even get the PC on at this point really). I ran a Hijack this scan and heres the results, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey litljohn7485,

Welcome to Lavasoft Support Forum! I'm Ltangelic and I'll be helping you fix your computer problem. Sorry for the long wait, we have very limited number of staff here, and it can take a while before someone replies to your thread. Thanks for your patience in waiting. :)

There isn't much in your log, we need to do deeper scans.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hey litljohn7485,

Your logs aren't so bad, we'll use some tools to remove the infected files.

Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, and print out a copy of it as you may not have access to the forums during the fix.

1) Uninstall Programs

Please go to Add or Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
LimeWire 4.16.6
mIRC
Viewpoint Media Player
WA! Peer 2 Peer 6.5.L.B

Optional Removal (highlighted in green): LimeWire, mIRC and WA! are P2P programs that can compromise your computer's security, it is highly recommended that you uninstall these programs. Viewpoint is foistware installed without your permission, you should remove it along with these P2P programs.

NEXT

Use Windows Explorer and remove the following (if present):

C:\Program Files\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\WA! P2P
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

2) Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Reboot your computer.

Next reply (please include):

Note: Please do NOT attach the logs and post ONE log in each post

Hey litljohn7485,

Your HijackThis log isn't showing infections that could have caused the resets and black screen, leading to me thinking that there are more things hidden. Let's run a stronger tool.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt and a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply.

Hey litljohn7485,

Not much in the ComboFix log either, how is your computer doing now?

In future, please run the tools in Normal mode unless I tell you to boot into Safe mode. Thanks. ;)

1) Run CFScript

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\orz.EXE

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"GoogleUpdate"=-

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
2) Run Kaspersky Webscanner

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Next reply (please include):

Note: Please do NOT attach the logs and post ONE log in each post

Fresh HijackThis log

No problem, take your time with the Kaspersky scan. ;)

The whole time the scan was running, the screen continued flashing on and off and the image became distorted over and over(it would just look scrambled on like half the screen if I tried to move the mouse at all at some points). I went to sleep and left it running and it had completed by the morning and then when I clicked on the "view results" button, the PC started slowing down incredibly until it just flat out froze. I tired everything, even left it on when I went to work hoping it would come out of it and it didnt. So now I have no results summary. This is why Ive been booting in safe mode, thats the only way that Ive been able to run anything without the PC resetting or freezing(I do understand why you asked me not to use safe mode earlier though, just letting you know why I was doing so previously). I tried to go back to the scanner to see if the results were still viewable but it appears they arent(screen is still distorting everytime i try to do anything).

Ill try running it in safe mode now since I figure it will probably be some time before you see this anyway and at least Ill have something then.

It pulled up the same amount of results as it did the first time so hopefully that wasnt a problem.

Hey litljohn7485,

I couldn't see anything in your log that could have caused the slowness of your computer. Are you still having the random resets and black screen problem?

1) Run ATF Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and VistaDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

2) Run CFScript

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\My Documents\John's Folder\budice penguin ss.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\acdseeupdate20080815.exe

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\visualbasicupdate20080815.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\xphelp20080829.exe

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\58\44eef97a-14658ffe
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\jvmsecman.jar-69ee0e0e-5d02d748.zip
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\jvmsecman.jar-69ee0e0e-6e5889e8.zip

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.
