I am one of the folks that previously added my hat into the ring - what I find now is that AdAware occassionally will complete a smart scan; but often still hangs at Conditional Folders. I find that once it does complete all the way, I must immediately reboot the system in order for it to delete the ones it could not delete. If I do not reboot immediately, guaranteed that the next time I run AdAware, it will hang up. I also thought the trick might be to always run the web update immediatley prior to scanning - that seemed to work for a few days; but then sure enough, I did the web update and then the scan hung at conditional folders - so that blew that theory.

UI FEEDBACK: In addition to hanging, the user interface of the new version is awful - it takes forever to start up - I click on a button and the UI just sits there with no visual confirmation that it is doing anything - and then finally it will decide to move to next screen or finally present me with pop-up dialog box telling me it is connecting to web or whatever. The UI interface is very unfriendly and slow to respond to user clicks. Just thought I'd toss that in here in case someone is looking at perfromance issues when they are figuring out how to fix this conditioinal folder bug.

Hello everyone,

I'm one of the developers at Lavasoft who is currently looking into this matter.

I assure you that we are aware of the issue and are working to fix it as soon as possible. The main problem is that we aren't able to reproduce the error on our own test systems which makes it very hard for us to locate the bug. If you are experiencing this issue we would love to get in touch with you and if possible have you run a special diagnostic build of Ad-Aware 2007 which will help us locate the problem and ultimately fix the issue altogether.

Please send me a PM if you are experiencing the error and would consider to work with us to try to resolve it.

Cheers,
Babar

you may contact me, i also have this problem, recent onset, worked okay before

i suspect someone out there has deciphered your algorithm

the program hangs up after cookies are identified as infections

i manually terminate the program, manually delete cookies, then run the software again, this time it runs to conclusion

this sequence has been replicated three or four times

=

i have also sought if there is other malware, via windows defender, and run symantic a few times, and also defrag, none of this solves this constant -run (hung, really, not running, stops at 'conditional' as others have posted)

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 on 4 computers as sole Administrator account. They have ALL been scanned and cleaned using AVG Free 7.5, AVG Anti-Spyware, Windows Defender, Spybot Search & Destroy, and XoftSpy SE. All have been disc cleaned, error scanned and defragmented. All are running Zone Alarm Free. The fastest is a 2.0 Ghz processor, the slowest is a 433 Mhz. As far as I know all threats have been removed except a few browser cookies. 3 were running Adaware 2007 on an earlier definition update succesfully and were as clean as i could get them. I am now running version 2.0.2.7 and definition update 0074.000. They scan up to the conditional scan and then freeze with the clock still running (approx. 80% done). I left the 2.0 Ghz one running for 3 days straight and it never finished. I also get the following error at start up, but I have no other user accounts.

lavasoft_Rodrick.gif

Even when this error does not appear the program will not stop using the "Stop scan" button. Sometimes the "X" will close the application. Other times it must be aborted via the task manager. This did not start happening until I upgraded to definitions above 0070. Hope this helps add to accumulated data and a fix is forthcoming soon. Please drop me a line.

Rod

i have posted on this before, i am somewhat relieved to find this is widespread problem (not me alone)

i have two workarounds, but one should know the cause

to repeat, this was not a problem until a recent definitions update,
i also updated the software updates, which gave me several non-english languages, which i do not need but took for completeness

i am using the free version
=

(1) first workaround, as posted:

(1a) i ran adaware 2007,
adaware reported infections in my cookies file,
chugged along,
and then it hung at conditional folders,

(1b) i X'ed out, (a true hang-up might defeat the X-out option, and )

replicated the hangup at conditional

I then x'ed out again

(1c) I then deleted cookies via firefox/ mozilla mechanism of clearing private data,

(1d) i then reran adaware 2007 and this ran to successful conclusion

(1e) So i decided that I had some cookie that was creating this problem, which would mean that this same cookie has been found in the systems of the other posters here, not likely

===========

(2) the 'solution' of clearing cookies is not optimal, as they contain useful information here

(2a) i replicated the hang-up

(2b) x'ed out WITHOUT CLEARING OUT COOKIES

THE SOFTWARE REMINDS ME THAT I HAVE UNFINISHED BUSINESS

i consented

(2c) I then reran adaware 2007 and it ran to conclusion with no hangup

i have no idea what it found, the cookies were still identified as infections

go figure

==========

(3) babar, are you there?

please give us an update

cheers

hello martin not sure if I understand you but when I try to X out it does not really want to I have to hit the close button several times it would not then I would hit the X button several times before it would close but it still does not finish I did do a delet of one of the files from the folder to get it to work one as was mentioned on one of the other threads but it only worked once and does not work now
thanks Trebor

I'm having the same type problem. It started yesterday after downloading and installing the latest definition update 0069.0000. It starts to run continuously after about 13 minutes when it reaches the point when it says it is Scanning
Folders (Conditional). It then runs for many hours with only the elapsed time changing. As far as I know my system is clean as judged by other spyware and virus protection programs.

I guess I'll add my 2 cents worth. I purchased the 2007 Pro and the same scan problem occurs, amongst a bunch of other problems. I'm eagerly awaiting answers, tick tock tick tock. :) :)

This happens on my computer at home too. It gets stuck when scanning the hosts file on object:

127.0.0.1 liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com

Any idea what's going on?

:( Just installed AAW 2007 yesterday. Same problem with full scan, hung up on conditional files. Ran smart this morning and found 37 TUI 3's. So that's seems OK. I also run SpyBot and use ZoneAlarm and McAfee security. On another forum it suggested that SpyBot might interfere with 2007, but couldn't find a follow up to confirm. Had no problems with SE except no one ever told me that the download conditions error going on since February was because it was no longer supported, even though I went to the forum at the time to try to find the reason. I just found out after installing 2007.

So I'm waiting for a solution.

Hi, I'm having the same problem...have tried reducing the file scan to 20,000 then down to 10,000 with no change. Scan still stops on conditional files and runs endlessly and I have to shut down computer to stop the scan.

Microsoft did auto updates on April 12, & 14, and I've been having other problems since then, such as slow screen changes and don't know if this could be related to Ad aware problems. I haven't run a successful scan in weeks. Please advise.
Thank you,
Jan Mary

Just checking back.... a week later...I notice this thread was started 6 weeks ago....has there been ANY progress at all? Or do i just give up on this and find an alternative? I have used Adaware for a long time now and have been quite happy with all previous versions, but this is getting ridiculous. Some feedback from the authors would at least let us know you are still working on it. Perhaps a temporary fix for some encouragement?

Hello all I am sorry to say that I have found a alternitve due to what seemed to be a lack of working this out the AVG 2008 is way better now and it is free as well I do hope that Adaware gets their system fixed as they usually are a good product.
but Because of my waiting so Long when I did Run my New updated AVG I did find some spyware that someone had attached to my computer so I hope that they can fix this before we loose our computers to nosy hackers
have a great day and thanks for what Help you did give me

I paid my $$$ for Pro but gave up on it long ago 'cause scan wouldn't complete for me (like many others it appears). Since then I downloaded and removed the free version several times, all with the same result. I can't enter the technical debate but from a matter of principle, what is going on at Ad Aware? I can't see any substantive feed back from them in this thread. I wonder if they have any interest at all in correcting this fault in their software which surely must reflect upon their image as a leading provider of anti spyware software. I've used Ad aware for years it's been a good product. up till now.

Scan won't complete
I have the free version of Lavasoft 2007. The scan stops at Scanning Files Conditional. I tried several things including uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times, cleaning the registry, anything I could think of...but to no avail. After reading posts on this site I noticed that a bunch of other people are having the same problem. Has the administrator fixed it yet? Is there a 2008 version? Thanks.

 Listening to the echo off the walls....."UP TILL NOW.....Up Till Now......up till now........"

This is happening to users across the board regardless of OS or installed software/hardware. I have not heard of one solution yet that works. FIX IT!!! or lose the advertisement that your satisfied customers have been reverberating for years in a few weeks. :D

Ahhhhh... Couldn't this be a bad case of hosts file hiijacking?

If 127.0.0.1 is your computer, wouldn't that entry in your hosts file effectively block the symantec new threats page? The only thing is that I do not see this entry anywhere when I look into my hosts file, and that I am still able to access the symantec new threats page.

Any ideas???

You can add me to this list now, I've been using 2007 for awhile, but this problem just started happening last sunday afternoon, I can't run full scan or smart scan without it freezing, and can only exit by going through task manager and ending it that way. Will we ever get an answer??

There is no "one size fits all" answer here. The Developers are following the initial report of freezing on conditional scans and continute to look for causes, however, many of the subsequent posts here are regarding other problems.

For the member who has the entry in the HOSTS file causing the hang, that IS an entry put there by malware at some point. If your computer is infected it may be the reason for the freeze. If not infected at present, if you have locked your HOSTS file, that will also cause a malfunction if you try to use Ad-Aware to clean it (it can't because the HOSTS file is locked).

For those with problems removing cookies. This has been shown to be due to other security programs and "immunize" feature protecting cookies. If you have used another program to "immunize" against cookies, Ad-Aware cannot remove them properly. You'll need to undo the immunize first, reboot and then scan and remove them with Ad-Aware.

For Rodrick who posted the screenshot. That is a different error when something has disrupted the Ad-Aware service from running. It is probably best to post a new topic to investigate that 1814 error or you may search the forums here for others who have resolved it.

For those of you with the Plus and Pro version, it would be best to contact the office Support Center to which you are entitled one-to-one assistance from our Support Team. This is very strange. When I scan with Adaware, it gets stuck on the 127.0.0.1 liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com entry in my hosts file that would effectively block the symantec new threats page. However, I am still able to access the symantec new threats page and am unable to find that entry when I open my hosts file using notepad. The only entries in my hosts file are ones added by Spybot automatically to block bad websites, such as spysheriff. I have only ever been infected by a virus once, the polyglot msn worm, which I was able to remove without any difficulty. However, I do not think that that worm is responsible for the entries as that happened months before Adaware started acting up.

Also, scanning Spybot returns nothing, so I'm quite puzzled.
