Hi

Sounds like something is blocking Ad-Aware 2007. Could you open Windows Defender, click on the tools icon to open the tools and settings window. Then select the quarantined items. Is Ad-Aware 2007 listed? If so select any items for Ad-Aware 2007 and click the remove button. Then close Windows Defender.

Next close any browser sessions you have open and stop Winpatrol, try starting Ad-Aware 2007 from the desktop icon.

Does Ad-Aware 2007 now start? Don't forget to restart Winpatrol before you start browsing the web again.

Post back how you get on.

Many thanks

Hi,
Checked Windows Defender, but I installed this after the problem with AAW 2007 to give me protection in the absence of AAW.
I have also tried shutting down Win Patrol and all other fire walls with no success.
Regards,
Ken.

Hi,

OK, at least we have eliminated your other security programs as the reason for Ad-Aware 2007 not starting.

Could you try one more thing please and reset the Ad-Aware 2007 settings and prefetch.

Start Windows Explorer, select the tools menu, then select the folder options menu, then click on the view tab. Scroll down and select the radio button for "Show hidden files and folders", and uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

Then navigate to the prefetch folder. This is under c:\windows\prefetch. Then in c:\windows\prefetch look for these three files and delete them:

aawservice.exe-xxxxxxxx.pf
ad-aware2007.exe-xxxxxxxx.pf
lsupdatemanager.exe-xxxxxxxx.pf

where xxxxxxxx will be a random set of numbers and letters. If more than one version exists of the above files with a different xxxxxxxx part then delete all of these .pf files. These are just prefetch files and will be rebuilt next time you try to run Ad-Aware 2007.

Next navigate to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft

right mouse click on the Ad-Aware 2007 folder and select rename. Rename the folder e.g. to Ad-Aware 2007-old

Now click on the Ad-Adware 2007 desk top icon.

Post back how you get on, and please indicate if you have a broadband connection. If so we could try tracing but the log file will be large so a broadband connection would be handy to upload the file. Do you have problems starting any other programs?

Many thanks

Hi,
There are two folders that are listed under AAW in widows Prefetch folder.
(1) Ad-Aware 2007 9A7E5pf
(2) Ad-Watch 2007 exe-0622402Dpf Size 80.8KB
There is one other file called WUPDMGR.exe-2F30BEAB.pf is this connected to AAW?
This is as far as I have gone awaiting your next.
Ken.

P.S. By the way I have broadband.

Hi

Please delete the prefetch files for Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch. The wupdmgr is not part of Ad-Aware and does not need to be deleted.

Try running Ad-Aware 2007 from the desktop icon. If it still does not open then please rename the c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007 folder to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007-old and try the desktop icon again.

Many thanks

Hi

Apologies for the delay, I have been maxed out at work and will be on holiday for a few days now.

Can you check if the Ad-Aware 2007 folder was recreated in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\

If there will be two folders the renamed one and the new one.

Hi

That is interesting. The fact that the Ad-Aware 2007 folder was re-created shows that Ad-Aware 2007 actually ran, at least for a short time to create the new folder.

Could you try running from a new user account?

1) Create a new admin user account. For help on creating new user accounts see this Microsoft article:

http://support.micro....com/kb/279783/

2) Then logoff from your account and logon to this new account.

It will not have a desktop icon so open Windows Explorer, navigate to the c:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007 folder,

right mouse click on Ad-Aware2007.exe

select "send to"

select "Desktop (create shortcut)"

then double click on the new Ad-Aware 2007 desktop icon. Does Ad-Aware 2007 Window display from this new user account?

When you have finished you can log off this new account and go back to your original user account.

Hi

Had some more thoughts on your problem.

1) Have you ever connected your PC to a second monitor? If so please try attaching a second monitor again and start Ad-Aware 2007, does it appear on the second screen?

2) If the above does not help please try the following:
  • close all open windows
  • double click on the Ad-Aware 2007 icon
  • press alt and space i.e. press and hold the alt key and then press the space bar - (this should open the window menu, which may or may not be visible. cont as below)
  • press the m key (m to select move)
  • use the arrow keys press left, right, up, down a few times to see if the Ad-Aware Window starts to appear from one of the edges on your monitor
  • if the window appears drag it into full view
Post back if either of these help.
