According to the manual, Ad-Watch should block all sites within the "Pop-ups" category.

With Ad-Watch running, and switched to Medium, I've tried visiting a few of the sites in the list, and I am able to access them without a problem. (using IE 6 & FF2).

My questions are:

Is Ad-Watch supposed to block normal browsing to these sites as is intimated in the manual, or does it only block pop-up messages that reference these sites?

A quick reply would be appreciated

I think you must be using Ad-Aware SE?

If so, the sites lists is no longer used in the new 2007 version and the SE version will only be available through the end of this year, therefore, no new sites lists have been developed for a while now.

If you are using IE6 with SP2, that browser supports blocking popups as described here:
http://www.microsoft...pupblocker.mspx

For IE 7 security/privacy features page is here:
http://www.microsoft...rivacy_pr7.mspx

For Firefox, popups are covered under Content Options here:
http://www.mozilla.o...firefox/options

As I posted this in the Ad-Aware SE area of the boards, you can assume I'm using SE :)

I'm not interested in a new sites list, nor in whether the browser supports blocking of Pop-ups.

My question, which I thought was straightforward, was

Does Ad-Watch allow blocking of websites based on it's internal list as is claimed within the Help manual for the software?

I think you must be using Ad-Aware SE?

Hi supportguy,

I just needed to verify we are talking about SE because sometimes people post in the wrong area. So thanks for that clarification.

And I apologize if I wasn't clear. The internal list you see referred to is the "sites list" I spoke of in my last post.

So yes, it will work in SE right now

....but it isn't being updated and it won't be continued in v.2007 after SE expires at the end of this year.

Thanks,

I'm running Ad-Watch, and it appears that none of the sites within the internal list (generated from lavasoft, rather than "additional" sites provided by myself) are not being blocked.

I'm trying to work out whether they will only be blocked in a pop-up message, or simply browsing to them using IE/Firefox will prevent them appearing (therefore acting as a content filter type of program).

The wording in the help file suggests that it will indeed block "normal" browsing as opposed to pop-up attempts.

I copied this from the FAQ on Ad-Aware SE

A more detailed explanation can be found on our FAQ page for Ad-Aware Plus
http://www.lavasoft....upport/faqs.php

Q: How do I allow certain pop-ups on my computer?

A: Ad-Watch employs two methods to block pop-ups: aggressive pop-up blocking and black listing.

Note: A white list allows all sites on the list, and blocks any others. A black list blocks all sites on the list, and allows any others. White lists are not included in the current version of Ad-Aware SE, and you cannot add pop-ups to your list of trusted sites.

If you would like to see a particular pop-up but are unable to (and you know that your browser or other software is not blocking pop-ups), check to see if the pop-up is being blocked by Ad-Watch through its aggressive pop-up blocking. If it is not, you need to modify your black list.

The aggressive pop-up blocking feature is based on behavior and cannot be modified to allow through certain pop-ups. It is turned on by default. You can turn it off by following the directions below, but we recommend turning the option back on after you have finished viewing the pop-up.

* Open Ad-Aware SE.
* Click on the "Ad-Aware Configuration Window" icon.
* Click on "Tweak."
* Click the plus sign next to "Ad-Watch" to expand the Ad-Watch branch in the tree view.
* Deselect the "Block pop-ups aggressively" option.

A good explanation here:
http://www.lavasofts...s...ost&p=29327

More here
http://www.lavasofts...s...ost&p=17489

Check your setting for blocking popups as explained in those two links above.

The sites.list hasn't been updated in quite a long while. And since it is going out of development with SE soon, you might want to employ something more up to date if you want to block sites. This is a good recommended one using the HOSTS file block method
